Still trying to figure out in my head how to redo a complete "story arc" of sorts that would probably take up 2-3 hours of playtime. We're getting there since I do have WIP tiles and a bit of a dungeon started to replace my original scrapped story beats. I'm also hyper focused on trying to finish a Mario side project at the moment, so Penumbra Crystallis is still "on hold" until probably the middle of April or so. That's about all I can give on game progress for now. The point of this blog post is not about my progress, it is about...

MONSTER GRAPHICS!

As usual, these are by the ever-awesome level2janitor! With these additions, most of the current placeholder monsters are now out of the game, so things are looking good! level2janitor's monster designs just fit so well with the overall aesthetic and tone of Penumbra Crystallis, so I'm always delighted to get new graphics from him. Anyway, what we have here today from left to right is...

Princess: The name of a tricerastegotops that resides within the Grandoise Amphitheatre. The player has to fight Princess at a certain point in the story to prove themselves. I told level2janitor to just make a dinosaur that had the head of a triceratops and the body of a stegosaurus, and I think he did pretty awesome with it. Princess is the first time this graphic will be seen, but it will also show up later in the game for the standard tricerastegotops enemy.

Rock Golem: This bad boy currently resides in the Salar Volcano, and the placeholder sprite that I was using was easily three times the size of what level2janitor designed. I am so much happier to have a graphic this size, because the other one was enormous, but it was all I had to use as an acceptable placeholder. This golem graphic just hits all the right notes. He's got a sufficiently grumpy looking face to intimidate players, a chunky body to denote good defense and strength, and just an overall nice design with A+ texturing! I love how this one turned out.

Guardian: I've mentioned in the past how Penumbra Crystallis has a lot of ancient temples that are short temples/puzzle dungeons that are similar to Legend of Zelda: BotW's shrines. Guardians can be fought in these temples if the players are careless. This sprite is also used for a boss in Hautley's Tower, so it will already be playing double duty. I told level2janitor that I love the way that it looks like the animated armor is magically controlling the sword through telekinesis. Very cool as always.

Anyway, these sprites are already in the game and have had the enemy formations that feature them realigned a bit to fit with the new graphics. I'll probably have screenshots showing some of the newer monster graphics in action, along with progress on my next dungeon and the slime ranch that I previously talked about, once I finish my Mario side project in another 3-4 weeks time. Until then!
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-59499296794013484722022-02-17T03:53:00.003-08:002022-02-17T03:53:54.752-08:00February 17 Monsters Preview
It's been a while since I've made one of these posts, and I'm happy to do another one because I love showcasing the stuff that's been made FOR Penumbra Crystallis. Today I've got three new enemy graphics from the ever awesome level2janitor to show off.

On the left we have a monster that has been in the game for a long time now - the Bogaconda, which resides in the Trei Marshland! There will be new snake enemies appearing soon as well, so this was a really wonderful gift to receive. I really love the patterning on the snake body itself, and the face is really well done and expressive (well, for a snake face).

In the middle if the Fire Elemental, a powerful elemental enemy that dwells in Salar Volcano where it spawns from lava pits and chases the player down. I pointed at the World of Warcraft fire elemental model as my inspiration for this nasty fellow's overworld sprite, and I can definitely see the inspiration come through in level2janitor's graphic. Love this guy and can't wait to reuse him later for other purposes. Perhaps recoloured black/purple to serve as some kind of demonic energy elemental? We'll see!

Finally, and on the right, is the Gargoyle. This extremely nasty enemy appears only twice so far, once in a chest in Mount Houzell and as a possible encounter in the Grandoise Amphitheatre's Battle Wing. The gargoyle possesses a buttload of HP and has a very irritating attacks, and I think that this super charming "grumpy" gargoyle that level2janitor made really fits perfectly with the gargoyle enemy's attacks and such. I can't stress enough how much I love this fella's grumpy expression, it's just so perfect!

Anyway, that's it for this monster graphic update. Expect more updates soon, hopefully about the slime ranch that I'm really eager to flesh out.

UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-87005223464346329322022-02-16T07:55:00.006-08:002022-02-16T07:55:52.742-08:00The Joy of Accessories
First came equipments lists... and now it's time for accessories! No worries though, the folder being deleted wasn't a HUGE loss! It more or less just contained BGMs that I hadn't yet used, organized documents/lists/spreadsheets for equipment and weapons, and NPC names. The actual game folder is a totally separate thing and was unaffected by this silly mishap. Anyway, I'd figure I'd go ahead and share the updated armor/gear lists just for the sake of having SOMETHING on here since the dev blog has been the unfortunate victim of frequent radio silence since November.

Armor List:
Cloth Shirt
Leather Armor
Silk Shirt
Aquatic Sash
Iron Armor
Chain Mail
Branch Tabard
Bard Tunic
Cotton Robe
Ancient Armor
Hiking Gear
Gladiator Armor
Chitin Tunic
Karate Gi
Ranger Tunic
Spandex
Hauberk
Mage Robe
Rage Regalia
Ember Cloak
Frost Cloak
Storm Cloak
Druidic Cloak
Angelic Cloak
Devilish Cloak
Arctic Coat
Wizard Robe
Sentry Armor
Ninja Suit
Regal Shirt
Bone Mail
Church Robe
Golem Mail
Leviathan Suit
Splint Mail
Silver Armor
Sorcery Suit
Anger Harness
Joten Armor
Mirror Vest
Black Armor
Shadow Suit
Gaia Cloak
Maximilian
Bushido Suit
Paladin Armor
Plate Mail
Saintly Robe
Templar Armor
Divine Vest
Brigandine
Platinum Armor
Seraphim Suit
Dragon Armor
Lordly Armor
Lich Robe
Hero Armor

Helmet List:
Bandana
Bandit Mask
Iron Helmet
Headband
Bramble Crown
Galeforce Hat
Heated Cap
Magic Hood
Darksider Helmet
Mink Headband
Vagabond's Cap
Griffon Mask
Pointed Hat
Wolf Mask
Feathered Cap
Beret
Straw Hat
Turban
Infantry Helmet
Blindfold
Sallet
Tiger Mask
Ranger Cap
Barbut
Conical Hat
Druidic Crown
Ninja Hood
Wyvern Mask
Viking Helmet
Kabuto
Tragedy Mask
Vishnu Helmet
Bone Helmet
Great Helmet
Holy Mitre
Samurai Mask
Undead Hood
Royal Crown
Paladin Helmet
Yggdrasil Mask
Dragon Helmet
King's Helmet
Heavenly Halo
Oracle Chapeau
Bahamut Mask

Shield List:
Wooden Shield
Buckler
Anemone Shield
Iron Shield
Trei Shield
Targe
Lucifron Shield
Wizardry Shield
Parma Shield
Heater Shield
Heater Shield
Kite Shield
Spiked Shield
Hydra Shield
Rondache
Gorgon Shield
Ember Shield
Frost Shield
Storm Shield
White Shield
Dark Shield
Escutcheon
Bone Shield
Indra Shield
Tower Shield
Aegis Shield
War Shield
Silver Shield
Paladin Shield
Platinum Shield
Dragon Shield
Hero Shield

Phew! That's a lot of equipment, and it doesn't factor in the stuff that I'll randomly add over time since I have lots of blank spaces in the database to add additional pieces of equipment while also keeping them in alphabetical order when viewed in-game. There's probably a lot of inspiration from the Blackmoon Prophecy games when it comes to the naming of some pieces of equipment as well, which should make sense since this is a Final Fantasy world with, well, the Final Fantasy removed from it!

Anyway, Slime Ranch will be officially started today. Last night I just got the base exterior map done, selected some fun BGM for the map, and sprited the slimes themselves. Today I hope to start the real meat and potatoes of the Slime Ranch - the obtainable slime pet/party member.
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-2395420908258743742022-02-15T06:06:00.007-08:002022-02-15T07:19:38.278-08:00New Character for Monster Ran- .... er, Penumbra Crystallis!
While chatting on Discord about monster capturing games (Digimon, Monster Rancher, Pokemon), inspiration randomly struck. I at first joked that I should add a monster training mini-game to Penumbra Crystallis and market it as a major feature to suck in the Pokemon fanatics, but then the joke evolved into something that I seriously want to do. Penumbra Crystallis players will be able to...

RAISE AND TRAIN A SLIME.

After acquiring the ship about 7-8 hours into the game, players will be able to visit an island where a slime rancher resides. This slime rancher will give the player the ability to raise and train a pet slime that will be able to join and fight with party.

The slime will start off at level 1 and will be extremely fragile and weak, but raising its level and feeding it snacks at the slime ranch will allow players to raise its stats and teach it new abilities. When the slime reaches certain level thresholds, it will even be able to transform into stronger versions of itself that are elemental based. This will also grant it new abilities and ultimately decide what kind of learnable abilities, resistances, and traits it will acquire going forward.

Slimes will level up like all other characters, but levels will not increase any stats other than hit points. Instead, the level of your slime will just determine how much you are able to raise its stats by (ie. at level 1, stats may not be able to exceed 10-15, while that may be 15-20 at level 2 and so on).

After acquiring a slime, the slime rancher will gift the player with a basket to store the slime's food in. Slime food (what the food is going to be, I'm going to keep a secret for now, but it should be weirdly cute) will appear EVERYWHERE in the world after acquiring the slime and the food basket. All the player needs to do is find food in the wild (or in castles/towns) and interact with it. The player will then acquire +1 slime food, which will be determined via variable (so that the number can go as high as you desire, no limit on carry capacity), and this food can then be used at the slime ranch to improve the slime's stats and traits.

Going to start working on this today because I'm genuinely excited about the idea. I'll probably share screenshots of how this is going throughout the week!

ALSO.... the radio silence with the game's development since November (maybe end of October?) was due to me being unhappy with how a plot point was unfolding in the game, and I was having severe writer's block when trying to write something new to replace the plot point. I honestly wasn't pulling a George R. R. Martin and just "not working on it". I'm starting to piece something together, so I will probably start making some solid progress again soon.
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-8563239015121776782021-12-23T12:33:00.001-08:002021-12-23T12:33:46.390-08:00Vahn's Journal
Just a minor update.

I will be adding an item to the game called Vahn's Journal that he will start the game with. To think that characters will probably only be hitting level 10 after approximately 7-8 hours of play is crazy! Anyway, here's what you can expect from the core cast when they finally reach the double digit levels.

Hans: Dash
A physical attack deals damage using Hans's speed stat rather than his strength. Also inflicts wind elemental damage.

Vahn: X-Strike
A strong physical attack ability that deals damage twice (since, well, an X-Strike has to sword slashes). Uses the standard physical attack damage formula, just gives Vahn about 1.75x more damage and costs little MP.

Vera: Raise
An ability that will become increasingly desirable to players as they enter the double digits and the game's difficulty (which is much higher than Blackmoon Prophecy's) continues to ramp up. Raise does exactly what you'd think, it revives a party member from KO status.

Oalston already has a good arsenal of spells, so his next ability will likely be level 12. Kassandra, who just joined the party, does not learn anything new right away so that players can get used to the abilities she comes with.

Another new playable character is finally in the game though, and it is none other than... General Braak!

Temporary monsters until level2janitor makes enemy graphics to replace these ones.

Braak, like Vahn, uses swords. That is where the similarities end though. While Vahn is a purely offensive fighter, Braak is a bit of a tanky bruiser with debuff/utility skills. This week may be devoted to tidying up things he finds, but I will also be home all weekend long this week. Unfortunately, a woman stands between them and the tower. This woman's name... is Karen.

Here's a snippet from the dialogue with Karen that I am currently writing.

Karen will see Hans and Oalston approaching Hautley's Tower.

Karen: Stop right there! I don't recognize you! Who are you!?

Hans: Hey, we're from Branch Castle! We gotta get in that tower behind ya, we're lookin' for an escaped bad guy of sorts.

Karen: WHAT? Don't you DARE call me madam!

Oalston: Apologies, Karen. Hans is but a squire, and I am a wizard from Trei. Whatever prejudice you may have against military types, I assure you that they are unwarranted when conversing with us.

Karen: I don't care who or what you and that boy are! Look at him, he's just a CHILD, and an ANCIENT TOWER is no place for a child! He'll vandalize the walls!

Hans: U-Uh... what? But...

Karen: NO BUTS! I've seen it a hundred times over from children like you! And you, "old wizard", if that's what you really are, what is wrong with YOU!?

Oalston: I'm afraid that I do not understand, Karen?

TO BE CONTINUED
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-54449811793882129652021-10-05T08:53:00.003-07:002021-10-05T08:53:30.910-07:00Current Progress on a Familiar Town

A town that I would think most Blackmoon Prophecy players would be able to recognize since it appears in both Blackmoon Prophecy and Blackmoon Prophecy II. As a priestess, Alaia is also a capable healer and medic.
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-69860869038862767762021-10-01T08:28:00.003-07:002021-10-01T08:28:45.413-07:00Twitch VOD: Completing Mount Houzell
FINALLY completed Mount Houzell in another game dev stream last night! Let's start with the first character, who is actually no stranger to those who have been following Penumbra Crystallis' development so far.

Hey, it's Veks! He also has a proper surname now at last. While Veks will not be a permanent party member, I do anticipate that he'll pop up every now and then to help the party out when they're in a bind. Veks currently joins the party twice, first when Vahn and Hans investigate the Branch Sewers and then a second time when Vahn and Vera head to Oaktown. I may give the player the option to have Veks permanently tag along later as an optional character, at which point I may make him controllable as well. We'll see! Veks deserves recognition as a "party member" though even if he isn't a permanent addition simply because players will be seeing a lot of him and he will be a staunch ally.

The resident bad boy general from Blackmoon Prophecy will experience a change of heart throughout the events of Blackmoon Prophecy, but what will trigger him to switch sides? Well, that's for the players to discover themselves since I'm not here to give story details away. What I can say is that Braak's weapon of choice is the greatsword and his main purpose in battle will be shutting down enemies and creating weaknesses.

Wait a second! What game is this again!? You're seeing things correctly, that's Edric Csardim from Blackmoon Prophecy II. Avee redesigned Edric's portrait to make it fit in with the style he has used for the rest of Penumbra Crystallis' portraits. So what is Edric doing here? Well, he's going to be encountered by players just by playing through the game normally and he will still be a military man from Lenadia. That's about where the similarities end. Since Edric will be an optional character, I'll leave what he does a surprise to the players.

There is also one final character, an optional female character (who will be completely new and is not a holdover from Blackmoon Prophecy) that I have not commissioned a portrait for yet, but she will have some interesting gameplay mechanics and will have a unique equip screen that will look like this:

Body

Ring

Ring

Trinket

Trinket

Codex

Codex

Codex

Looking forward to the final character and working out how she'll play, but that's a story for another day!
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-82202318969035714572021-09-16T04:37:00.003-07:002021-09-16T04:37:17.952-07:00"Arrow" and "Mimicry" Commands
Kassandra is a bit different from other characters in Penumbra Crystallis so far. Vahn, Hans, Vera, and Oalston all have single unique commands, Kassandra has two - Arrow and Mimicry.

The Arrow Command

Arrow abilities are learned via leveling up and allow Kassandra to do more interesting things with her arrows such as dip them in potions to allow them to heal or reverse engineer remedies to imbue her arrow shots with status conditions. Arrow abilities mostly consume items in order to use them (predominantly twigs - a special item that Kassandra will need for several arrow abilities and can be purchased from item shops). Here are a few Arrow abilities that Kassandra will start with:

Aim: Allows Kassandra to attack twice per turn for a few rounds. Requires her to focus, consuming 25% of her maximum MP to use.

Magic Arrow: Consumes one mana to inflict magic-based physical damage to one target.

Splintershot: Consumes five twigs to fire numerous weak shots at randomly selected targets.

Stun Arrow: Consumes one twig to stun a target for a single turn.

Triage Arrow: Consumes one potion to heal for an amount roughly on par with potions (100 HP), but could be a little more or a little less. Is also capable of inflicting critical heals.

The Mimicry Command

As previously stated, Kassandra is the replacement for Ami from Blackmoon Prophecy, so she's the resident "blue mage" of sorts even though that term is not used in the game. Kassandra's official class is huntress.

Mimicry abilities are learned in a very simple manner. The party can find monster statues littered throughout the world, and if Kassandra is in the party, she will be able to learn a new mimicry ability by studying the statue and what is written on it. Easy peasy!

While mimicry abilities will become extremely diverse as the game progresses, here are the three basic abilities that Kassandra starts with:

Chopodile: Copies the "All Chop attack that chopodiles use. Attacks all enemies, inflicting non-elemental damage.

Shelldon: Copies the "Gooey Graze" attack that shelldons use. Low non-elemental damage and poisons the enemy.

Skeleton: Copies the "Roll the Bone" attack that skeletons use. Throws a bone at one target for non-elemental damage.

That's about all for the Arrow and Mimicry commands. Kassandra starts with some pretty basic stuff, but she'll be able to learn to do lots of neat things as the player progresses through the game!
UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-23730149397408554022021-09-15T15:27:00.002-07:002021-09-15T15:27:43.504-07:00A Wild Archer Appears (Part 2!)
Kassandra arrives to save the day! I'm really excited to finally start work on this character, as she has a few little gameplay gimmicks that will make her more interesting to use. She'll use items from your inventory to enhance her arrows, can use a skill that briefly allows her to attack multiple times, and is also the resident blue mage in the game (since she is the replacement for Ami from Blackmoon Prophecy).

As I started in a previous post, she also has some cool story significance as well that I can't wait to see people who played Blackmoon Prophecy react to!

UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-76938165182787087282021-09-13T07:02:00.001-07:002021-09-13T07:02:09.449-07:00September 13 Monsters Preview
This monster preview is a bit different, as it's not random encounters! Instead we have a boss and a summon. First we have the Darksider boss...

Darksider is a big, mean skeleton capable of attacking the party several times in succession due to having four arms. He is encountered shortly after the end of the Penumbra Crystallis demo. He was a bit of a challenge to balance well because of his multi-attack tendencies, and he gave Thomas a good run for his money when testing, so I think he's right where I want him to be. Remember, I want the bosses in this game to push players far more than bosses in any of my previous games!

And with Bones McGee out of the way, we have the first summon sprite from level2janitor, and it is Chione! Demo players will remember her being acquired at the end of the Water Shrine. Here is her new permanent graphic:

I think that level2janitor did a good job with her. The placeholder that I used previously, while decent looking, just looked like a regular woman wearing white. level2janitor's version of Chionne looks properly elemental and "spirity". Having this graphic is also is a huge plus now, as it means that summons and monster graphics are consistently the same style.

Anyway, that's all for now! I should have some stuff to show off soon myself. Even though the "hiatus" is over for the game, I didn't do much work over the last few days as I was distracted by Final Fantasy XIV, doing small fixes/updates to Triple Triad: Tournament of the Elements, and real life responsibilities. I should have some stuff to show off in the coming days, hopefully in the form of the new party member Kassandra!

UPRChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12398247294316997837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4776241438909539015.post-39156016216946852222021-09-06T06:27:00.001-07:002021-09-06T06:27:22.215-07:00Hiatus Over
Hiatus is over. This is probably the largest project that I've ever finished within a one month timespan. This is a love letter to all things Final Fantasy and Triple Triad. Her entire background and role in the game had been completely altered just prior to the game being put on hiatus, so I'll be excited to share some of those details with you guy's soon as well.
